i give private dobro lessons in the BOSTON AREA........send me an email,
and i will try to work a time out with you. all levels are welcome, complete
beginners, to advanced.
you don't have to own a dobro to take lessons, as we can provide an instrument
for you during the lessons, or we can set up
your acoustic guitar to be played lapstyle. drop me a line....i'd love to
hear from you....
i have also been teaching beginning harmonica, both privately, and at Passim School of Music.....
here are two pages dedicated just to the HARMONICA
CLASS
if you don't want to commit to one on one lessons, or are
just starting out, the next best option is to
TAKE THE DOBRO CLASS AT
CLUB PASSIM
http://www.clubpassim.com/musicschool/
i teach a dobro class at club
passim in cambridge mass. often,
i feel like the luckiest person in the world because i get to do this.
technically, the class is called 'lap style guitar' so people won't be scared
off by the term "dobro"......and or think they need a dobro to
attend. they don't.
the class usually happens about
four times a year, winter, spring, summer, fall....
and usually meets six tuesdays in a row, at either 6:30 or 7pm.
each of the six sessions is 75 minutes long, but we usually go longer because
i get fired up talking about the dobro.....
the class is designed for complete
beginners, and is open to anyone. we have had several
graduates who never played an instrument before, so they were literally
starting from square one.
the things you WILL need to attend,
however, are: 1. some kind of guitar(doesn't have to be a dobro)
2. a steel bar of some sort 3. a nut extender/extension nut, which is a
small device that lifts the strings of your guitar and allows you to play
lap style......if you have a dobro, that's fine,
if not, that's fine too, you can always use an acoustic guitar, which is
actually what most people end up doing. we also tune a whole step low, which
puts a lot less pressure on your acoustic guitar......
all of these items can be found at your friendly neighborhood music store,
or on line
through paul beard's resophonic outfitters located in scenic maryland.
http://www.beardguitars.com
in the first class, we'll talk
about the tunings we'll be using, and set up people's
guitars to play lap style. this only takes a few minutes to detune, slide
the nut extender in, and retune. it will not harm your acoustic guitar,
and is easily removable.
each week we cover a different
style of playing, starting with basic bar control, right hand finger excercises,
damping, vibrato, hammer ons, pull offs, etc......moving on to slants, chord
variations,
hawaiian styles, blues, and more.....
i also try to talk a little bit about the history if the instrument, and the different styles that we explore as well as point to some recommended recordings where students can continue their studies....
